Sing along Cinema is one! And it's been a most entertaining first twelve months. We have toured the length and breath of the country, doing numerous interactive shows in Cork and Galway along with our Sugar Club Monthly residency.

Sing Along Cinema was a response to a lack of truly fun, interactive, dress up and be silly nights out. And we found no shortage of lunatics willing to sing along and dance in the aisles. 

We have seen audiences making an amazing effort coming in character, from Pink Ladies to flying monkeys to retired hand models! At the end of the day at a Sing Along Cinema Party it all about the audience. 

To celebrate our first birthday Sing Along Cinema presents for your sing along pleasure an extraordinary, sumptuous visual and musical experience - Moulin Rouge. With full Movieaoke subtitles and a huge sound system. Your Burlesque Hostess on the night, Roxy Rhinestone, will be leading the Can-Can in the aisles.

We can't think of a more perfect venue to enjoy Baz Luhrmann's surreal classic than the Sugar Club. Mixing as it does Parisian Bell Époque and contemporary pop to create a musical and visual feast!. The cocktails will flow, the mirror ball will spin and romance will surely follow.

If you haven't been to Sing Along Cinema it's just about the most fun you can have on a night out. After ‘Dirty Dancing’, which had to have been the most fun, not to mention rowdiest, Sing Along Cinema night so far, we are returning to the Sugar Club on Dublin’s Lesson Street with ‘Footloose’. By popular demand I might add. We’re expecting a full house again so please do book early.

Twestival® (or Twitter Festival) uses social media for social good by connecting communities offline on a single day to highlight a great cause and have a fun event. Twestival is the largest global grassroots social media fundraising initiative to date. Since 2009, volunteers have raised close to $1.2 million for 137 nonprofits. All local events are organized 100% by volunteers and 100% of all ticket sales and donations go direct to projects.

The funds from this year's Dublin Twestival go towards sending Ireland's Athletes to this years Special Olympic Games in Greece.

Paddy Cullivan, Clint Velure from The Camembert Quartet, Resident Satirist with the Leviathan Political Cabaret and Twitter Fanatic has been confirmed as the MC for the evening.  Paddy will be doing some comedy, Political Satire and music on the night. Songs of Praise will provide the body of the night and we'll have some very special live acts also dropping in and doing a few numbers.

Also we have games and raffles, including spot prizes such as a fantastic two night stay at the luxurious Castle Leslie Estate Hotel!

Strictly Handbag returns Mondays - March 2011

Strictly Handbag is more than a club. It's church for heathens - a weekly dose of absolution through dancing and drinking, or whatever you're having yourself.

The regulars are an elite group of messers, for whom a good night out is well worth starting the week with a hangover. In fact, one of the things that contributes to the unique atmosphere is the absence of the nine-to-five demographic. The gainfully employed are a nice enough bunch, but you don't want them hanging around reminding you that you're not exactly greasing the wheels of industry by staying up until the am on a Tuesday. Handbag started as a bet that you couldn't fill a club on a Monday night.

It will be 17 years old in October 2011 - which makes it Dublin's longest running club. Handbag began life in the Kitchen, but found its home when it moved to Rí-Rá in 1996. Ri-Ra’s relaxed approach to activities such as dancing on tables and a door policy free from social segregation make it the perfect location for a bit of Monday madness. indeed Ri-Ra's lack of a VIP area fits perfectly with the Handbag ethos - this is not a club night for people who like to celeb spot berween sips of-over-priced champagne. A-list types do come, but they aren't exactly feted, When Matthew McConaughey's PA rang to say "he's coming down, he'll need a bodyguard and his people will use a password," promoter Martin Thomas said there would be no bodyguard and the password would be Matthew McConaughey. One night Dennis Hopper turned up dressed in a three-piece Irish tweed suit, complete with tweed cap and stout walking stick. When introduced in that Oh-so-Hollywood manner - "Martin, do you know Dennis?" - Martin said "No, but I like your suit." Of course, Bono has been down a couple of times, and yes Radiohead have on occasion gone off on the dance floor to Club Tropicana, but no one really noticed at the time.

In a really great club, everyone is fabulous.

Then there are the tunes: Handbag's music policy is an ingenious mix of 1980s classics on the main dance floor basically the greatest dance music in history that doesn't involve blips and bleeps. On the right night, you will find every square Foot of floor, and occasionally the tables, chairs and bars, shoulder to shoulder with dancers representing every pop genre of the 80’s.

Every great club has a defining moment, when it becomes the cultural headquarters for a group of who never knew they had so much in common, At this point the club acquires a personality which it retains as long as it survives. For Handbag, that point was the Spring of 1998. At that time Monday night in Ri-Ra was a given for a large number of people. You didn't have to arrange to meet anyone, you just went. Bands huddled in corners and argued the finer points of the politics of sound. Couples got together, broke up and shagged other people's partners in a manner that Appalachian rednecks would find a touch incestuous; it wasn't the most moralistic or monogamous of scenes. Although there was no actual dress code, people generally made an effort. The staple look at that point was nu-Mod - sharp but cheap. Handbag has never attracted a snotty, dressy crowd; there were always those who had gone our for a quiet Monday pint and been press-ganged into going to the club.

Singing your heart out to your favourite musical is the perfect tonic for our troubled times. Jonathan deBurca Butler goes on a movie date with a difference .

On a chilly Friday night a curious crowd of Greasers, and dolly birds in 1950s bubble dresses assemble out-side The Button Factory in Temple Bar, Dublin. Inside there may not be an ice cream sundae in sight and it's unlikely that any of 400-strong crowd have their Chevrolets parked outside, but at this event people are encouraged to dream a little and if they can, step into character. We are attending Dublin's first Sing-Along-Cinema and the movie of choice this evening is the classic musical Grease.

"What gives?" I hear you say as you raise your collars aggressively Well, the name is a dead giveaway really. They play the movie and with the help of subtitles, you sing along. And it is all rather good fun. I am not in costume and neither is the missus but it does not take her long to get into the swing of things and sure enough she is singing along to the first number. As a Hiber-no-heterosexual male, it is enough for me to tap my fingers. Initially, the crowd were under-standably a smidgen coy but a cou-ple of sips out of a pint, a sexy look from Danny (John Travolta) and the catchy rhythms of Summer Nights had people on their feet fairly quickly. It wasn't long before people were jiving up on stage, singing along to every last word that came up on screen or simply drooling over the leather-clad Danny. And if you haven't guessed already, this was attended mainly by women.

The man behind the idea is Martin Thomas of The Rock and Roll Rescue Squad; although if the truth be told, he has his five year-old son Felix to thank for it. "Last October, I was watching Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang with my son and I just happened to turn on the subtitles and I saw that they worked for the songs. I thought nothing more of it and then I went to a Rocky Horror Show Halloween event in a Dublin club. I went and I started thinking there's a lot of other movies out there that people love and I thought wouldn't be great to take the subtitle thing and have some sort of interactive movie ex-perience." Thomas had originally planned to get the event off the ground in December last year but logistics and snow got in the way. The venue he wanted was not available either and he felt it had to be in a nightclub so that punters had the space to get involved as much as possible. Tonight, helping that interactivity along is Master of Ceremonies, actor Declan Rooney, who cuts a bit of a lonely figure at times and could probably do with some help. He manages to get the crowd going, though, and by the end of the night the stage is invaded by dancing Pink Ladies shouting out You're the One that I Want at the top of their voices. All told, the night is a huge success. "I think it's important to have an MC just to kind of loosen people up," says Thomas,

he's there just to explain what's going on and also just to mess around really. With Grease you can do that, but it won't always be like that. His role is different every time. The host is there to let people feel at ease, he's there to get people involved."

As with all of these novelty events, social media has played a large part in attracting punters along tonight. That is how 43-year-old Eimear O'Dallaigh found out about the event. "It's a pity more people weren't dressed up but it was good fun," says Eirnear who is dressed in a striking red bubble dress. "They could have done with a woman being up there and they need to get a bit snore audience reaction. But I would definitely recommend it." Erika, 33, who has shown up dressed as Sandy agrees: "A fantastic night, we were discreetly down the back at the begin-ning," says Erika. "But we went up on stage at the end. There was a whole heap of people up on stage at the end. The only thing that could trump it would be The Sound of Music."

The next event takes place on Saturday, February 19 in Cork when the Pavilion off Patrick Street plays host. "It was originally a cinema and it's a great space," says Thomas. "It's got all the things we want to offer; a bar, a place to dance, we want to have a proper lighting rig to add ef-fects. So it'll be good. The perfect place for this kind of thing." Thomas, who has worked in the nightclub and entertainment industry for over 17 years says these days people expect more for their money but they also want some escapism. "People want to go out and they just want to forget about all the grief," he says. "I see it in night-clubs, the numbers are falling and even in pubs the numbers are down. People want to go out and be entertained more. People need to have the craic, that's what it's all about."

The next Sing-Along-Cinemas are Grease in The Pavilion, Carey's Lane, Cork on February 19 and The Wizard of Oz in The Button Factory, Dublin on February 25. Tickets €9.50.

The Organic Interactive Orchestra will turn a large group of non-musicians, of all ages, into giant organic musical instrument by use of ‘Sound Tubes’, Visual cues, on-stage performers and ‘conducters’.

The audience will become both the performer and the instrument, with only a basic electronic rhythm track being provided from the stage. The sound will be lose, even chaotic at times, but it will be the ultimate interactive musical experience for those in attendence, because they will, in essence, be the music!

It should also be a lot of fun.

After five years of legendary Sunday nights in the Village Songs of Praise is moving to Wednesdays. The mid week mayhem kicks off on the 10th of March just in time for you to warm up your vocal cords for our Paddy's Day celebrations the following week!

So much as we have loved our Sunday night slot; we were growing frustrated with having to kick everyone out at the height of the party, due to Sunday licensing laws. And anyway after half a decade it's time for a change, and Wednesdays need to learn how to rock again.

Songs of Praise started in 2005 as a way to inject some fun into a club culture that was becoming increasingly dull and uptight, two fingers if you will to those who were taking themselves a little too seriously.

Rock + Roll, Punk, alternative Karaoke with DJ Montane wrecking the gaff in-between performances, a simple and somewhat daft plan. All we knew was that we needed somewhere loud to get nuts on Sunday night, and The Village was silly enough to offer us the ideal space to do exactly that.

What happened next was remarkable, joyous and a touch unnerving. Who would have bet that five years on, not only would we still be packing in the lunatics weekly, we would also have taken Songs of Praise on the road for a series of tours, hosted stages at the Trinity Ball and the Oxegen Festival, not to mention put on some pretty special private parties.

The Rock & Roll Rescue Squad will be taking care of DJ duties in the Carlsberg Lounge and the Green Room at this years Comedy Carnival.

Carlsberg Comedy Carnival takes place this weekend from Thurs 23rd to Sunday 26th July in the stunning setting of the Iveagh Gardens. The comedy festival will play host to over 65 world class International and Irish acts, playing 44 shows over one unique carnival weekend.

The Rattle & Roll Club hits its first birthday later this month and to celebrate we're having a big party with face painters, magicians, balloons, goodie bags along with our usual offering of dance floor antics and interactive games for the kids. And lots of cup cakes, of course!

It doesn't seem a year ago that we kicked off Ireland's first dedicated weekly disco for kids, but it is! What a great year it's been; from starting off in the Bodega Club in Dun Laoghaire to moving to our new home in the wonderful Dandelion on the Green. A year full of joy for all the kids that have graced our Dance floor, for all the birthday parties we have helped celebrate and the distractions we've been able to provide to over worked parents! Our DJ, Hostess and Dance leaders have been having plenty of fun with the kids too, of course!

We've become a firm favorite for parties for kids from 4 - 8 years old and in our new home we've been able to deliver excellent quality food, fresh juices and smoothies in a child friendly environment.

Amazing Baby played live for 30 minutes, with support from Sinead NiMhordha. Club was packed - 500 people. MGMT, Mercury Rev, Dirty Pretty Things and Har Mar Superstar all in attendence and having a blast. All in aid of MGMT sold out Ambassador gigs. Also marks the final Strictly Handbag on Monday nights.

After 14 years it's time to call it a day for Monday Night Handbag - but
we're going strong in The Sugar Club on Friday nights and The Loft on
Saturdays. The night finished with some Karaoke for Dirty Pretty Things/MGMT and Har Mar in Ukiyo - bizzare stuff - but great fun!

All door moneys will also be donated for this very special event.
Barnardos' mission is to challenge and support families, communities, society and government to make Ireland the best place in the world to be a child, focusing specifically on children and young people whose well-being is under threat.

Songs of Praise - Guitarmageddon kicks off on the 15th of October and promises to bring the madness that is Songs of Praise Rock + Roll karaoke to a whole new level, helped along by a full five and a half hour show. What better place than Dublin's newest home of live Rock + Roll where they will be holding service in The Green room – the battle between stadium rock and plastic pop begins.

The Songs of Praise song list is cheese free and they have a huge custom selection of rock, indie and alternative tracks for audience members to make their own, mangle or just howl along to. The show is staged with a backdrop of Marshal Amps pumped through a huge sound system.

Dublin's longest-running club night recently hit the jackpot, adding another string to its bow by scoring a Friday night slot at one of the city's swankiest venues. Since gaining a reputation as Dublin's most popular gay night within weeks of launching at U2's Kitchen club in 1994, Strictly Handbag has been popping up at different destinations all around the country, with a Monday night slot in the capital and a weekly Saturday outing in Dun Laoghaire. Claimed by the promoters to be "the original School Disco", the playlist oozes pop and disco cheese, although the Clash's Rock The Casbah and New Order's Blue Monday still get the biggest cheers of the night. Look out later this month too, as Strictly Handbag throws two big birthday bashes over bank holiday weekend.

On Monday the 27th October Glasvegas, are flying to Dublin with their record bags, for a special guest appearance at Strictly Handbag’s 14th Birthday Party in SPY - Dublin's longest running club night.

Glasvegas have rewritten the rules on what an indie band should look and sound like and their debut album stormed straight in at the top of the charts. They harness the bleakly romantic spirit of their native Scotland, to wall of noise that would make the Jesus and Mary chain or The Velvet Underground proud. To celebrate our second birthday and mark the 35th anniversary of the album’s release, Sassy Sue's Go-Go Inevitable presents a special exclusive screening of Quadrophenia with an introduction by Mod Legend, Irish Jack. It was Jack's Mod adventures that inspired Pete Townsend's classic rock opera on which the film was based. He is generally accepted to be the inspiration for the character of Jimmy.

There could be no more fitting or evocative setting than the Sugar Club for a screening of this homage to 60s style and culture. The Sugar Club started it's life as a cinema in the same time period as the film is set, and was lovingly restored in the 90s after years of dereliction. You could literally be in the movie.

After the film Dj Dandelion will be joined on the decks by special guests and friends for a night of classic soul, garage and 60s pop. It promises to be a memorable evening.

The last two years have seen our loyal army of regulars grow and Sassy Sue's is now the only place to be seen on a Friday night.
Packed houses freak out under our mirror ball for some truly iconic special guest who have included Glen Matlock [The Sex Pistols], Kevin Rowland [Dexy’s Midnight Runners], Terry Hall [The Specials] and Will Sergeant[Echo + The Bunnymen]. Along with some of the new bread of artistes with beat sensibilities and psychedelic souls, the Horrors and the Go Team amongst them.

The history of the NEW MUSICAL SOCIETY

Here is the Paul Lennon 12 inch extended dance remix of the history of the NMS - which after much research and soul searching (and several stiff drinks) includes the definitive list of all the NMS gigs from 1981 until1988 including many of the legendary gigs from Drogheda Boxing Club. Enjoy!

NEW MUSICAL SOCIETY In the years preceding the establishment of the New Musical Society in1981, the ripple effect from New York 1974, London in 1975 and 1976,Manchester in 1977 and 1978 and Dublin in 1978 finally hit Drogheda in 1979 and 1980 with an explosion of new wave bands.Two gigs were held in the Jayteens club rooms on Bachelor¹s Lane featuring up to five local bands. These were held in autumn/winter of 1980/81.A number of local groups also played in the Penny Farthing (later Joey Maher¹s), The Gem and The Hideout, both as headline and support acts.
On the alternative disco front, Paul Thomas ran a weekly bash in the White Horse Hotel on a Saturday night in late 1980 and early 1981.In late spring and early summer 1982, original NMS members Roger ŒGoosey¹O¹Reilly, Mary Roden and Joe McCormack set up the successful Subterranean alternative disco in the former Bibas nite club at number one, Shop Street.
It ran until early autumn.It was the tragic events of the Stardust fire on Dublin¹s northside on the night of February 13/14, 1981 that sparked the idea of holding a benefit gig to raise funds for those bereaved and injured.
That went ahead on March 8 and it was from this concert that the NMS was born.

SEPTEMBER At a meeting in Mick Reid¹s house at Cherrymount in September 1982, a decision was taken to concentrate on running gigs. Money accrued in the NMS account at that point (from records £222 punts) was handed over to a new youth group in which Brian Conyngham (former editor of the Drogheda Independent and later editor of The Local News) was involved.Enda Murray, Mick Reid, Gavan Kierans, Niall Kierans, Jack White, Ann McAuley, Paul Lennon and Joe McCormack were the members involved in the NMS at this stage.

We're delighted to announce the return of Mr Will Sergeant. Bunnyman, guitar legend and gentleman.

Will played in RiRa for us last October at the Strictly Handbag 13th Birthday and this time around it's the salubrious surrounds of The Sugar Club at Sassy Sue's on May 23rd.

This is gonna be savage! Expect everything from a Psychedelic Freak-out to Kingstown Skank, with some Nu Wave, no wave and even Peter Cook and Dudley Moore’s “Bedazzled” mixed in.

The big Bunnymen news this year is their sting of Full Orchestrated performances of the classic 'Ocean Rain' album in the Autumn.

There are guitar players that play guitar, and then there are those who use guitars to sculpt sound, to hypnotize, to create worlds in to which the mind can escape. With Echo and the Bunnymen Will Sergeant reintroduced swirling psychedelia to the angular world of post punk. Sergeant’s chiming, swirling echoes have wafted through indie music, inspiring the likes of John Squire (Stone Roses) and, well, deaf just about every indie kid who ever hid behind his fringe.

In a world of street cults and music media pigeon holing The Bunnymen maintained a scouse aloofness, avoiding post punk labelling yet achieving massive critical and chart success. More than anything Echo and the Bunnymen provided a dark corner in which to hide from the pastel glow of mainstream 8o’s pop.

The Black Diamond Heavies hail from the Southern States of America, but currently live as "vagrants/citizens of the world." Their music is urgent,raw,and full of ass-shaking soul. The live show has been described as both "Pentecostal"and"Demon-Possessed". Most of the material is original, although covers are sometimes thrown in as tribute to gods, generals, heroes, and vampires such as T-Model Ford, Muddy Waters, Nina Simone, and Tom Waits. The Heavies continuously gain momentum on their quest to unleash the punk-ass blues on the world. Last Friday Week, (29th Feb.) many elements conspired to keep our friends The Horrors from their rightful place, by Dandelion's side on stage, at Sassy Sue's Go-GO Inevitable. The leap year's crazy astrology, forces of evil in the form of a well-known budget airline and howling gale force winds.... A massive post NME awards hang over might not have helped either.

But the universe wants this show go on, The Horrors will again rise from their crypt in deepest London and attempt to ford the Irish Sea. Please join them on Friday 4th of April at Sassy Sue's Go-Go Inevitable in the Sugar club. Expect to hear Psych Garage rarities, mod classics, a splash of surf and some tunes from the dark side.

A Bit of Back Story: When Horrors swaggered on to the scene with their immaculate hair and noisy psych rock from beyond the crypt, those in the media who take themselves very seriously prepared to dismiss them. But with the release of their début “Strange House” last year said musos had to admit that there was a lot more to them than Bela Lugosi’s hand me downs and a love of The Cramps. Banned from MTV, splashed all over the NME, they soon proved more than equal to the hype. Like all proper Rock + Roll bands the Horrors have annoyed as many people as they have enthralled.

Now on the eve of releasing their second album, which is already making the doubters blush, and their tour documentary receiving Sundance screenings and serious critical acclaim, 2008 is looking being a big year for The Horrors.

From the cradle to the rave

A phenomenon that's already gripped the US and Britain, baby disco, the family dance experience where 'the only drug is Calpol', is about to arrive in Dublin, writes Finola Meredith

It sounds like the ideal solution for bored parents and their jaded infant offspring. Why not hit the dancefloor en famille? That's the idea behind the "baby disco" phenomenon which has gripped the United States and is now breathing life into humdrum family weekends in Ireland and the UK. No more Sunday afternoons spent praying for deliverance at an indoor adventure playground, forced to inhale the pervasive stench of hundreds of sweaty little feet as you try to read the papers.

Baby discos tend to be far more sophisticated affairs. For a start, mums and dads can ditch all their drippy, anorakish parent-wear and climb back into the skimpy clubbing gear they thought was lost to them forever, while cool babies can swap the frankly tedious world of nursery rhymes and puréed carrot for an afternoon spent shaking their nappy-clad booties to classic tunes.

The dominant brand in the family clubbing experience is the US-based Baby Loves Disco, an afternoon dance party which eschews the usual cuddly, pastel-coloured ethos that dominates pre-school events.

"Make no mistake, this is not the Mickey Mouse Club, and Barney is banned," announces the publicity. Clearly, it's edgy stuff. Baby Loves Disco, or BLD, was started in a Philadelphia nightclub in 2004 by dancer and choreographer Heather Murphy, who found that taking her toddler around the usual run of children's activities provided a fairly dismal experience, leaving either her or her son bored witless. After teaming up with DJ Andy Hurwitz, Murphy brought the party to New York City in 2005, and it has since spread coast to coast in the States. An Ireland launch is expected later this year.

The secret of BLD's success is that it seems to appeal to parents as much as their youngsters. Hurwitz says: "It's more than just something to do for the kids. Baby Loves Disco is fun for parents: we get the chance to mingle with other parents, dance with our kids and have a Saturday afternoon cocktail to boot."

According to Naomi Timperley, the UK host and European co-ordinator of Baby Loves Disco, "our biggest hurdle is finding the right venues". No manky old leisure centre or church hall will do; only the "hippest nightclubs" are selected, before being fully kitted out with bubble machines, baskets of scarves and egg-shakers, a chill-out room and nappy-changing stations. Oh, and each venue is double-cleaned before the diminutive clubbers get anywhere near it, presumably to remove the sticky vodka spills, broken glass or drug residues that are so often a feature of clubland. (You can't be too careful - it was a close call when the toddler daughter of actors Jude Law and Sadie Frost sampled a tempting little ecstasy tablet she found on the floor of a posh London club while attending a birthday party a few years ago.)

And don't worry about your offspring's delicate little lugs, or indeed her delicate sensibilities. The noise level is a tolerable 80 decibels, and she won't be exposed to music with parental advisory warnings. Let's just say the playlist - "classic disco and contemporary, yet clean, favourites" - is more likely to feature the Bee Gees or Abba than the Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up . As Heather Murphy herself acknowledges, "the combination of 'clean' and 'cool' is a difficult balance to strike, but very desirable to younger parents who don't quite buy the old-fashioned notion of trading in your old life once parenthood hits".

So you're standing with a mojito in hand ("yes, the cash bar will be open for mummy and daddy"), watching as your baby dons a pair of pink heart-shaped shades and toddles on to the dancefloor to rock out to I Will Survive . So sweet. But can Baby Loves Disco really recreate the clubbing experience of your own younger days? Connor Russell, a postgraduate student dad who was - until the recent birth of his son - no stranger to the murky charms of his local indie club, believes that there's no point settling for second best.

"Yeah, sure, you've got the lights, the glitterballs, the club setting, even the drinks, but you won't have that unique adult atmosphere, that late-night sexual undercurrent," he says. "And the music will be bouncy and it won't be very loud. You just wouldn't have the same dark, drunken abandon. I'd rather take my kid to the park, to be honest".

Sharon Curran, from Enfield in Co Meath, is an enthusiastic Baby Loves Disco supporter. After attending a BLD session at the Clapham Grand in London with her four-year-old daughter, she's determined to bring the event to Ireland, and has already started sourcing possible venues in Dublin and Cork. But does she feel the experience is as much a pleasure for the adults as the children?

"Definitely!" she says. "Your whole perspective changes when you're a parent. I really enjoyed going out dancing with my friends, but we've all had babies now and it's so much harder to go on those kind of nights out. The Clapham Grand event was great - I loved dancing away to all the old Motown songs. I've had my clubbing years, but this is a chance to come back and do it again with my child."

THE BABY DISCO phenomenon is already alive and grooving in Ireland, with more and more parents and children eager to experience it for themselves. Eva Staunton (aka Discomom) and her DJ husband, Cormac, have recently started up a Sunday afternoon event in Galway city, "playing Kylie, Sugababes, James Brown, anything that's danceable", and they've been overwhelmed by the response to the first disco, which sold out in minutes.

Meanwhile, the Rattle and Roll Club, billed as "Ireland's first dedicated disco for toddlers, pre-schoolers and kids" is getting ready to kick off this Sunday in the Bodega Club in Dún Laoghaire. Organiser Martin Thomas, who has run club nights of the usual adult variety in Dublin for 14 years, was inspired by the musical tastes of his toddler son, who despises Barney but favours U2 and Bon Jovi.

"We want to do things with our children that make them smile but won't drive us crazy," says Thomas - and he thinks he has the answer with the Rattle and Roll Club. The added incentive, for parents, of an on-site tapas and wine bar, rather than the "real mirror-ball-lit dancefloor" and "dance cheerleader", may prove the clincher here. But despite his own background, Thomas was determined not to use a nightclub for the event, opting instead for the gastro-pub-style environs of the Bodega Club. "As a parent, I just wouldn't bring a child into a nightclub, no matter how clean," he says.

There's no doubt that some baby discos aspire to a grander vision than others. Playing a starring role in this year's St Patrick's Festival in Dublin is the Baby Rave, recently returned from a trip to the Adelaide Fringe Festival in Australia. Developed as part of the Belfast Children's Festival in 2005, the rave - which boasts its own MySpace page, cool logo and irresistible motto ("the only drug is Calpol") - appears more design-conscious and educationally focused than other similar events.

That's not to say it doesn't sound like great fun, with its promises of parachutes, inflatable balls and sensory floor-coverings.

"Baby Rave is quite different from the other baby discos doing the rounds," says Ali FitzGibbon, director of the Belfast Children's Festival. "It's home-grown by us and works on a large scale with a lot of interaction by dance facilitators, so there is much more of a development element to it. We go for big venues that can hold 300 to 400 people at a time. It's not a weekly thing, it's a big event, the kind of thing people watch out for. Really, it's like the difference between a Friday night club and Manumission!"

BUT THE VERY IDEA of creating disco environments - however sanitised - for babies and their parents has got some conservative commentators in the US reaching for their green ink. Christian Science Monitor has been to the fore in questioning the combination of babies and clubbing, noting severely that the usual 1pm to 4pm time-slot for such bashes coincides with most children's nap-time. But the real concern seems to be that children are being co-opted into a situation that is designed more to cater for adults' desires than their offsprings'.

"One of the major premises revealed in [Baby Loves Disco] is that we've shifted from a child-friendly to an adult-driven lifestyle," argues Lynne Griffin, an author and lecturer in family studies. "What we're seeing increasingly is adults sharing a lifestyle with their children that is geared towards adult needs for everything from sleep to daily activities such as entertainment and communication."

Other critics worry that introducing children to the euphoric delights of clubbing at such a tender age may make them rather too comfortable with the sexy, grown-up version once they become teenagers.

If nothing else, the baby disco or baby rave experience offers parents relief from what Ali FitzGibbon calls "the awful plinky-plonky nursery music" that saturates so much of pre-school culture. And while some mums and dads may cast a wistful glance back to the days when going to a club meant the possibility of being picked up by a gorgeous stranger, along with consuming oceanic quantities of silly cocktails and indulging in wild, uninhibited dancing - well, at least they can still have the dancing. As Sharon Curran insists, with resolutely cheery conviction, "Sunday afternoons are the new Saturday night".

Wendy James Strictly Handbag Easter Sunday Special

We're delighted to announce the Irish DJ debut of Wendy James at our Strictly Handbag/Songs of Praise Bank Holiday double header in The Village on March 23rd.

Wendy - from the iconic late 80's band - Transvision Vamp had seven top thirty singles UK hits, including two top five singles and a number one album, Transvision Vamp’s catchy pop-punk songs and memorable raunchy videos were embedded into worldwide consciousness between 1988-1993.

When the decision had been made for Transvision Vamp to split Wendy wrote a letter to Elvis Costello, asking for guidance and in response Costello wrote a full album's worth of material for her. These songs became the tracks on her solo album entitled Now Ain't the Time for Your Tears (1993).

In her time away from the music business, James moved from England to New York and learned to write and perform music. In 2004 she returned to the music business as the singer, songwriter and producer of the band Racine.

Whilst thrilled at having had the album written for her, Wendy was ultimately musically unsatisfied with it and overall with singing other people’s work so she cancelled the world promo for it and took a time-out to learn to play and write herself. Upon finishing the demos for Racine No.1 she then moved to New York City and immersed herself in both rock’n’roll culture and hip-hop. ‘Racine Number 1’ (2005, One Little Indian) was just Wendy alone, performing, playing, production and composition.

Now, ‘RACINE 2’ has been recorded in New York with her new 5-piece rock’n’roll band featuring 11 new Wendy James compositions, produced and mixed by her and mastered by Howie Weinberg. To be released on CD by Jungle, it comes packaged with a bonus album ‘Racine No. 1 Demos’, the beginning of her Racine odyssey. And so on the live circuit, in recent months the band has toured the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Holland, Germany, France and Spain, and are on the eve of the SPRING 08 tour. EVERY SONG IS DOPE

Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley Irish DJ Debut

Jaysus we're busy today on the booking buzz. We have Mr Bob Stanley from St Etienne coming in on May 2nd for an exclusive set at Sassy Sue's. And if that wasn't enough our mutual mate, Martin Green is back in town too spinning in the bar. Should be a great night of 60's pop and soul.

Saint Etienne were one of the bands that helped define the indie dance genre in the early 1990s, fusing the production values of the dance-pop that emerged in the wake of the Second Summer of Love with the clever lyrics and self-aware production of indie music. A decade after the band's formation, The Times observed that Saint Etienne "deftly fused the grooviness of Swinging Sixties London with a post-acid house backbeat".

Their early recordings were packed with generic house music clichés, such as standard TR-909 drum patterns and Italo house piano riffs, but they soon found a more original sound notable by the use of found dialogue, mainly from classic '60s British realist cinema as featured on their albums Foxbase Alpha and So Tough.

This is a band who got their musical education in the darkest recesses of London’s subterranean clubs. They met and formed in ‘Junk’, the now legendary club night run by the keyboard player Spider Web, who along with drummer Coffin Joe has a long history of spinning records in dank basements.

What better place for these two elegant young ghouls to share their record collections than in the velvet splendor of Sassy Sue’s Go Go Inevitable along side Miss Dandelion. Expect to hear Psych Garage rarities, mod classics, a splash of surf and some tunes from the dark side.

The Rock + Roll Rescue Squad hope that you, like us, are settling in quite nicely to 2008. But before you continue breaking resolutions and looking up holidays in the sun on the interweb let's remind you what a spectacular year we had in 2007.

The Bodega Club in Dun Laoghaire was launched in October and redefined what salubrious clubbing could be, with friendly efficent staff, waiter service and delicious cocktails – not to mention the incredible 180° views around Dublin bay.

We had some fabulous company that re-wrote the idea of a guest DJ, like Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), Kevin Rowland [Dexy's], Terry Hall [The Specials] Ladytron, Andy Lewis to name a few.

Songs of Praise ventured out from it's home in the Village, teaming up with Xbox for a hugely successful Dublin College tour in November. Our You Tube Site had had 10,000 views already!

All of this and we haven't even mentioned our 3 sell out New Year's Eve shows in Bodega, RíRá and The Village!

Surely there can't be more for 2008 you cry? Firstly: don't call me Shirley, and secondly: Of Course!

Aaron Gavin named Songs Of Praise karaoke winner

Aaron Gavin (pictured) came out on top in last night's grand final of the Xbox 360 Songs Of Praise alternative karaoke contest in Dublin's Button Factory.

After several heats in venues and college bars across the city, it all came down to the best of the best, whose every move was scrutinised carefully by judges John McCallion from Warner Music and Hot Press' own Stuart Clark.

Performing The Darkness' 'Get Your Hands Off My Woman', Aaron faced off against James Murphy in the final, who gave an almost-as-stirring rendition of Muse's 'Supermassive Black Hole'.

Aaron walked away with a custom €2,000 Gibson electric guitar, while the winners of each heat bagged themselves a €1,000 Xbox package, including a copy of Guitar Hero III.

The Hot Press Guitar Hero was also crowned on the night, with Sara Ergren being judged the most impressive air guitarist of the bunch!
